If you’ve been in a motor vehicle accident in British Columbia, you may be experiencing more than just physical injuries. Anxiety, sleep problems, difficulty driving, flashbacks, and emotional distress are all common after a crash — and they’re all treatable with the right support.
The good news: ICBC covers counselling after a motor vehicle accident, and you may be entitled to sessions at no cost to you.
Does ICBC Pay for Counselling?
Yes. Under both ICBC’s Active Care and Enhanced Care models, counselling is a covered benefit for people injured in motor vehicle accidents in BC. This includes psychological and emotional support, not just physical rehabilitation.
You don’t need to be physically injured to qualify. If the accident has affected your mental health — even if you walked away without a scratch — you may still be entitled to counselling coverage.
What Does ICBC Counselling Cover?
ICBC-funded counselling can help with:
- Anxiety and fear related to driving or being in a vehicle
- PTSD and trauma responses following the accident
- Sleep disturbances and nightmares
- Flashbacks and intrusive memories
- Depression and emotional distress
- Grief if the accident involved the loss of a loved one
